What is Independent Living?

Independent living is about disabled people having choice and control over the support that they need to live and take part in all aspects of life.

Independent living means different things to different people, but a shared understanding of independent living is important if services are to be shaped to deliver the right support.

What are Centres for Independent Living?

Independent Living Centers are typically non-residential, private, non-profit, user led, community-based organisations providing services and advocacy by and for all disabled people.

Their goal is to assist disabled individuals to achieve their maximum potential within their families and communities.

Also, Independent Living Centers advocates independent living on a wide range of national, state and local issues. They work to assure access to housing, employment, transportation, communities, recreational facilities, and health and social services. These are just a few of the services offered.
